Morgan Rielly's name has floated around trade speculation for a while now, but insider Chris Johnston says the real story is much simpler than people think.
"The Leafs never got anything that made sense for them," Johnston said on First Up.
That's a direct answer to a question that's followed Rielly for a while. Was Toronto actively trying to move him, or just listening?
"This wasn't ever a case of management not seeing value in him or thinking you had to get rid of him, that he was a problem," Johnston added.
Rielly posted 36 points in 78 games last season, going minus-18 for a Maple Leafs team that finished 32-36-14.
His $7,500,000 cap hit has made him a natural name in trade speculation, especially with Toronto reshaping its blue line this summer by adding Darren Raddysh.
But according to Johnston, Toronto was never shopping Rielly out of dissatisfaction. The team simply never received an offer worth acting on.
Why this distinction actually matters for Toronto's plans
There's a real difference between a front office trying to unload a problem and one that's just waiting for the right return on a player it still values.
Rielly remains one of Toronto's most experienced defensemen, and his familiarity with the market and the room carries weight that a rebuilding trade package rarely accounts for.
Head coach Jim Hiller gets to keep a known quantity on the back end rather than replacing him with an unproven return that didn't clear Toronto's bar.
This also lines up with earlier reports connecting Toronto to a hypothetical Alexander Nikishin deal, one that would have required moving Rielly's contract to make the numbers work.
If that kind of swap never generated real interest from Carolina either, it explains why Rielly is still wearing blue and white heading into this season.
For now, Rielly's future in Toronto looks settled, not because the front office fought to keep him, but because nobody offered enough to make them think twice.
