Elias Pettersson is talking, and Vancouver Canucks fans should be paying attention.
On Monday, the center opened up about his relationship with new general manager Ryan Johnson, and the words carried weight.
"R.J. is someone I've known for a long time, and he's always been a good guy for me," Pettersson said, per Iain MacIntyre.
He didn't stop there. Pettersson said Johnson "just wants the best from you and wants everyone to be happy."
That's not nothing. Not after the season the Canucks just endured.
Vancouver finished 25-49-8 a year ago, good for 58 points and 32nd overall in the league. A -30 rating for Pettersson himself didn't help the optics either.
New coach, new voice, same core under pressure
Manny Malhotra took over as head coach on June 1, and now the front office is trying to steady a core that cratered last season.
Pettersson's own numbers tell a complicated story. He put up 51 points across 74 games, but his last 10 games of the year produced just six points and a minus-7 mark.
Compare that to Jake DeBrusk, who closed with seven goals over his final 10 games. Or Brock Boeser, who scored five times in his last 10 outings.
Pettersson's comments read like a player trying to reset the narrative before training camp even opens. He's framing the front office as a partner, not a pressure point.
Is that enough to erase a season where Vancouver went minus-100 in goal differential? Probably not on its own.
But it's a start, and it's the kind of quote that tends to age one of two ways. Either it becomes proof the culture actually turned, or it becomes a line reporters dig up in six months when things go sideways again.
Johnson inherited a roster with real skill and real scar tissue. Hronek put up 49 points and logged heavy minutes. Boeser scored 22 goals despite a brutal minus-48. Rossi chipped in 35 points in just 50 games.
None of that erases a home record of 9-27-5, which is the number that should worry people in Vancouver more than any quote from a player trying to stay positive.
For now, Pettersson is saying the right things. Whether Johnson's plan actually moves the needle is a question nobody in that market is ready to answer yet.
