Alexander Nikishin asked the Carolina Hurricanes for a trade after last season, and that request still stands.
Pierre LeBrun reported the update Monday afternoon, and nothing about the situation has moved since the ask first landed with the front office.
The 24-year-old defenseman just wrapped his first full NHL season, and it ended with a Stanley Cup for Carolina.
He put up 33 points in 81 games this year, holding down real minutes on a blue line that helped carry the Canes to a championship.
That production is coming cheap, too. Nikishin is playing this season on an entry-level cap hit of $925,000.
Trading a 24-year-old blueliner producing at that level for under a million bucks would be a mistake for Carolina. That kind of value almost never walks out the door on its own.
So why would a young defenseman fresh off a Cup want out of a winning locker room? The report does not say, and neither side has offered an explanation.
Nikishin's RFA status could complicate any exit
Nikishin is a restricted free agent this summer, and that alone gives Carolina real leverage even with the trade request sitting out there.
His playoff production cooled off compared to the regular season, managing just one assist across 17 games as the Canes rolled through the postseason.
Carolina finished the regular season 53-22-7 for 113 points, the top mark in the league heading into the playoffs.
That kind of depth is exactly why moving a cheap, productive young defenseman is such an awkward ask. It is like trying to sell your best snow tire in the middle of a blizzard.
Rod Brind'Amour has run this locker room since 2018, and steering a roster through a lingering trade request from a Cup-winning player is not a situation most coaches ask for.
General manager Eric Tulsky now faces the kind of decision that defines a summer: dig in, negotiate an extension, or start fielding calls.
