Montreal Canadiens complete a major captaincy announcement and there's a major change: Anderso now wears the A

Josh Anderson is at the center of a leadership reset under Martin St-Louis after Montreal reshaped its veteran core.

The Canadiens had an opening to address after Brendan Gallagher, one of last season's alternate captains, was traded.

Moments ago, Montreal announced that Anderson will serve as an alternate captain alongside captain Nick Suzuki and fellow alternate Mike Matheson.

That changes the group from last season, when Suzuki wore the C while Gallagher and Matheson carried the A. Gallagher's departure created the vacancy Anderson now fills.

For Anderson, the letter adds formal weight to his place inside the locker room. He has been one of Montreal's most recognizable veteran forwards through the club's transition.

The move also gives St-Louis another established voice among his forwards while Matheson remains part of the leadership structure from the blue line.

Suzuki stays at the center of everything, but Montreal has now made clear which veterans will stand beside its captain when pressure rises.

Anderson steps into Gallagher's leadership spot

The choice is notable because Montreal could have waited until training camp to settle the opening. Instead, the Canadiens made the hierarchy clear before the preseason grind begins.

Anderson's promotion also shows that this decision goes beyond offensive production. His physical game, bench presence and willingness to play through difficult stretches carry weight inside this group.

Gallagher's trade removed a veteran who had held an official leadership role and was closely tied to the identity of the Canadiens for years.

Giving Anderson the A keeps another hard-driving veteran forward in that inner circle while the Canadiens continue handing larger roles to younger players throughout the lineup.

There is added responsibility attached to the letter. Anderson will be expected to provide a steady voice when momentum turns, young teammates need direction or the bench tightens late in games.

For Suzuki, there is continuity beside him with Matheson and a different presence arriving in Anderson. That gives Montreal a clearly defined leadership structure heading toward camp.

The Canadiens didn't leave the vacancy open for long. Anderson now owns a bigger piece of the room, and the expectations around him just changed with it.
