Mark Scheifele can't hide his reaction to Connor Hellebuyck wanting out of Winnipeg

Mark Scheifele addressed the Connor Hellebuyck situation head on Saturday, and the Winnipeg Jets captain did not dodge a single word of it.

According to Mark Lazerus, Scheifele said the quiet part out loud. "We want Connor to be our goalie. He's a fantastic goalie, probably the best in the world, so that is what would be best."

That's about as direct as it gets from a locker room leader on a teammate reportedly looking for the exit.

Scheifele didn't stop there either. "At the end of the day, that's the nature of the beast," he said, adding he doesn't feel left at the altar.

Read between those lines and you get a captain trying to keep the room together while a two-time Vezina caliber goalie wants out. Not an easy balancing act.

Scheifele is coming off a monster season himself. He put up 36 goals and 67 assists for 103 points across 82 games, plus seven power play goals.

Jets sinking while the goalie drama builds

Winnipeg finished 35-35-12 for 82 points, ranked 26th in the league with a goal differential of minus-29. That's a steep fall for a team that's been a perennial contender.

The Jets also closed the year on a four-game skid and went just 5-5 over their final ten. Momentum was already an issue before this story broke.

Hellebuyck, for his part, posted an 0.895 save percentage across 57 games this season, going 18-23 in decisions. Numbers that don't exactly scream untouchable, even with his reputation.

Here's the strange twist. Scheifele and Hellebuyck carry the exact same cap hit, 8,500,000 dollars each. Two franchise cornerstones, same number, very different futures right now.

Is it a bad look for the Jets that their captain has to publicly reassure the fan base about a goalie who reportedly wants gone? Yes. That part isn't up for debate.

Scheifele insists his focus is on himself and helping Winnipeg win, and being there for Connor as a friend regardless of what happens next. Whether that's enough to hold a fractured room together through an offseason full of trade speculation is the real question nobody in Winnipeg has an answer for yet.
