The Brampton Steelheads just landed one of the biggest returns junior hockey has ever seen.
The Sudbury Wolves acquired Tanner Adams' rights, and the price was a genuinely staggering haul: 17 total draft picks headed back to Brampton.
Insider Jeff Marek reacted to the sheer scale of it immediately. "17 picks!!!!!" Marek wrote.
He didn't sound surprised by the trade itself, just the size of the return. "Tanner Adams is an excellent hockey player and Sudbury was where he wanted to play," Marek said.
"We all knew this deal was coming eventually," he added.
That last line matters. This wasn't a shock trade so much as a long-expected one that still managed to stun people with its actual price tag.
Brampton's return spans five separate draft classes, from 2027 all the way out to 2030, touching nearly every round along the way.

The headline piece is a 2027 compensatory fifth overall selection, plus a second-round pick at the conclusion of that same second round.
From there it's a wall of additional picks: seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, spread across Ottawa, Bradford, Peterborough, Sudbury, Windsor, Oshawa, Flint and Kitchener.
Seventeen total picks for one player's rights is an enormous number even by junior hockey's already pick-heavy trade culture.
Is a return this large actually proportional to what one player, even a genuinely excellent one, can deliver on the ice?
Sudbury clearly views Adams as worth mortgaging years of future draft capital for, and Brampton clearly agreed that price was fair to accept.
It's the junior hockey equivalent of a team trading its entire farm system for one proven bat, betting the immediate fit outweighs years of accumulated depth.
My take: trades like this only make sense when a player genuinely wants to be there. Marek's framing suggests that part was never really in question.
Seventeen picks is the kind of number that gets remembered for years, regardless of how either team's rosters actually shake out from here.
