Calle Jarnkrok is a former Maple Leaf now, and he's finally saying what last season actually felt like in Toronto.
Jarnkrok told hockeysverige.se, via Manskarlssonyao, that getting scratched repeatedly by Craig Berube left him genuinely confused.
"Two years ago, I couldn't play at all," Jarnkrok said. "But last year, I came in and felt in really good shape. I scored goals... and then he put me in the stands."
That's a blunt way to describe a coach's decision, especially from a player who says he felt healthy and productive at the time.
"It was a little weird," Jarnkrok continued. "At that moment, I was very surprised. I did well but wasn't allowed to play. It was tough to motivate myself and keep going."
Berube is no longer behind Toronto's bench. The Maple Leafs moved on this offseason, hiring Jim Hiller as head coach instead.
That timing makes Jarnkrok's comments land differently than if Berube were still running the show.

Despite the frustration, Jarnkrok didn't leave bitter about the city or the fans.
"It was a lot of fun playing in Toronto, even though the last year wasn't that fun," Jarnkrok said. "The whole city loves hockey."
That's a fairly clean separation. He can praise Toronto as a market and a fan base while still being honest about how one coach used him.
Healthy scratches are one of the most common flashpoints in any dressing room, and Jarnkrok's comments put a human face on how much they can wear on a player.
Feeling ready, scoring when given the chance, then watching from the press box repeatedly is exactly the kind of situation that erodes motivation fast.
Jarnkrok's words won't change what happened last season, but they do add real context to how that Leafs roster actually functioned behind closed doors.
Whether Hiller handles healthy scratches any differently remains one of the more interesting subplots to watch as Toronto's new era gets underway this fall.
