Calle Järnkrok won't be joining Mike Babcock's Oilers, choosing a return to Brynäs IF instead after weeks of NHL uncertainty.
Edmonton had been floated as a possible landing spot for the versatile forward, with Järnkrok still sitting on the unrestricted free-agent market late in August.
The fit made sense on paper. The Oilers could have used another experienced forward capable of moving around the lineup and handling different assignments.
Instead, Järnkrok has taken his future in a completely different direction. Brynäs IF announced Monday that the 34-year-old has signed a 3-year contract running through the 2028-29 season.
It ends a North American run that lasted 13 seasons. Järnkrok leaves the NHL with 316 points in 774 regular-season games.

That experience came across stops with the Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators, Seattle Kraken, Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Järnkrok chooses home over another NHL shot
The decision carries extra weight because Järnkrok wasn't simply looking for another short-term NHL opportunity. He has committed multiple seasons to the club where his senior career first took off.
Before leaving Sweden, Järnkrok produced 118 points in 185 games for Brynäs. He was also part of the club's championship team in 2012.
Brynäs gets more than a recognizable name. Järnkrok gives the roster a veteran who has spent years playing up and down NHL lineups, taking defensive assignments and adjusting to changing roles.
For Edmonton, the timing makes the decision sting a little more. Training camp is approaching, and Järnkrok represented the kind of experienced depth option that could have entered the competition immediately.
Stan Bowman's front office can still explore the remaining free-agent market, but one of the more experienced forwards available is officially off the board.
Järnkrok's decision also makes his priorities clear. Rather than extending his NHL career with another contract or possible camp opportunity, he has chosen stability, familiarity and a return to Gävle.
What looked like another possible late-summer NHL signing has turned into a major homecoming for Brynäs - and Edmonton will have to look elsewhere.
