Brett Peterson and the Detroit Red Wings may be closing in on each other, and it comes at exactly the right time for both sides.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported this week that the 44-year-old has opened talks with Detroit about its vacant general manager job.
Detroit has been searching since Steve Yzerman left the position on July 15, leaving a real leadership gap heading into training camp.
Peterson has spent since the 2020-21 season as assistant GM in Florida alongside Bill Zito, a partnership that produced two Stanley Cup championships together.
His name has circulated for other openings too. Toronto considered him before hiring John Chayka instead as its new general manager.
Peterson also brings real international experience, serving twice as general manager of Team USA at the World Championship.
He was second-in-command under Jeff Kealty during the gold medal run at the 2025 tournament, a partnership that speaks well of both men.

Kealty himself remains a name to watch here too, according to Friedman, even after recently joining the San Jose Sharks organization.

Peterson's championship background stands out in that group, given what he helped build alongside Zito in Florida over the past several seasons.
Whoever gets this job inherits captain Dylan Larkin's trade request as the first major decision on the desk.
Larkin posted 67 points last season, 34 goals and 33 assists in 74 games, on an $8,700,000 cap hit that runs through 2030-31.
A GM with real Cup-winning experience might approach that Larkin situation with more conviction than someone still trying to establish their own track record.
Detroit hasn't hired anyone yet, but talks with Peterson this week are the clearest signal so far of where this search might actually be heading.
Training camp is only weeks away now, and the pressure to fill this chair keeps building with every name that surfaces publicly.
