Connor Hellebuyck just blew up the Winnipeg Jets offseason.
The Vezina winning goalie put out an official statement Thursday confirming he requested a trade months ago, and he wants out.
"My position has not changed, and I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family," Hellebuyck wrote.
That is not a shot fired quietly through a beat reporter. That is a goalie going public, with training camp bearing down on Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Jets front office.
Hellebuyck carries an $8,500,000 cap hit and posted a .895 save percentage across 57 appearances last season for a Winnipeg team that finished 35-35-12.
The Jets stumbled to the finish line too, losers of four straight to close the year and ranked 26th league wide.
Coach Scott Arniel now has to answer questions about his franchise goalie's future before a single practice has been run.
Could Stan Bowman really pull the trigger on Hellebuyck?
Enter the Edmonton Oilers, a team that has been floated as a landing spot since word of the trade request leaked.
GM Stan Bowman runs an Oilers club that finished 41-30-11 and rode a six game unbeaten stretch over its final ten to close the season, a real playoff push that fell one round short of where this roster wants to be.
Edmonton's crease was a rotation of Tristan Jarry and Frederik Andersen last year, with Jarry posting a .882 save percentage and Andersen sitting at .874 across the split. Neither number screams stability.

Hellebuyck would instantly become the best goalie Edmonton has run out in years. But pairing a Vezina winner with a roster still chasing a Cup is not as simple as it sounds on Twitter.
Bowman would need to move real money and likely a piece of his young core to get a deal like this across the line, and that is where this gets messy. Is that even a fit worth the price?
Winnipeg has said nothing publicly beyond acknowledging the situation exists. Cheveldayoff has built this roster around a goalie who just told the fan base, in writing, that he is done waiting.
That is the kind of statement that changes a franchise's whole direction before training camp even opens. Whether Bowman is the one who ends up on the other side of that trade call is still very much unresolved.
