Erik Karlsson is back in Toronto trade chatter, but Jim Hiller may not have room for the star defenseman unless one major domino falls first.
The Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman has again been connected to the Maple Leafs, with Elliotte Friedman passing along a prediction that Karlsson could land in Toronto during the 2026-27 season.
The appeal is obvious. Karlsson remains one of the NHL's most dangerous puck-moving defensemen, and he produced 15 goals and 66 points last season.
But Toronto's blue line makes the fit complicated. Chris Tanev already occupies a major right-side role, while Darren Raddysh gives Hiller another established right-shot option.
Adding Karlsson without another move could leave the Maple Leafs overloaded on that side while creating difficult decisions deeper in the defensive rotation.

The financial side is just as significant. Karlsson carries an $11,500,000 cap hit, making him the highest-paid defenseman listed entering the season.
Morgan Rielly becomes the key domino
That puts Morgan Rielly at the centre of the discussion. Adam Proteau identified moving Rielly as the clearest path toward making a Karlsson deal more realistic for Toronto.
A Rielly departure would reshape the blue line immediately. It would create a different opening for Karlsson rather than simply forcing another high-profile defenseman into an already crowded group.
Karlsson is also entering the final season of his current contract and owns a no-move clause. That gives him significant control over any potential destination.
For Toronto, that means this isn't simply about deciding whether Karlsson can still drive offense from the back end. The Leafs would first need to determine whether changing their existing defensive core makes sense.
Hiller's deployment would also be part of that equation. Karlsson would arrive expecting meaningful minutes, puck touches and power-play work rather than a reduced role buried behind established options.
Until something changes with Rielly, the pieces don't line up cleanly. Toronto can like Karlsson's offensive upside without having an obvious place to put him.
If the Rielly situation moves, though, Karlsson suddenly becomes a much more serious name to watch around the Maple Leafs.
