Erik Karlsson's name just got attached to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it's coming from a source Elliotte Friedman trusts enough to repeat on air.

On the 32 Thoughts Podcast Tuesday, Friedman said someone handed him a specific 2026-27 forecast. Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson, Toronto.

That's the kind of line that stops scrolling thumbs cold.

Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast says someone shared a 2026-27 prediction with him: Erik Karlsson to Toronto.

He said Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson, Toronto.

Karlsson is still property of the Pittsburgh Penguins, carrying an $11,500,000 cap hit that runs through this contract. Nobody move him without clearing that number first.

His 2025-26 season wasn't empty production, either. Karlsson finished with 66 points in 75 games, 15 goals and 51 assists, plus a plus-8 rating at age 36.

Pittsburgh, under head coach Dan Muse and GM Kyle Dubas, closed the year 41-25-16 with 98 points, tenth overall in the league.

Toronto finished nowhere close to that. The Maple Leafs went 32-36-14 for 78 points, ranked 28th overall with a minus-46 goal differential and a seven-game losing streak to close the season.

Why the fit makes zero sense on paper

Here's the problem nobody's addressing. Toronto just hired Jim Hiller as head coach in June, and adding a 36-year-old defenseman making $11,500,000 doesn't fix a defense that leaked 299 goals.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, actually owned this matchup. The Penguins lost all three head-to-head meetings with Toronto this season, including a 2-7 blowout at home in late November.

So why would Pittsburgh move a player who torched the Maple Leafs for production against him three separate times? That's the part Friedman's report doesn't answer.

Karlsson's age, his cap number, and Pittsburgh's own record against Toronto this season all cut against the idea. This is speculation dressed up as insider information.

Still, Friedman doesn't usually pass along nonsense without a reason. Whether this becomes real business in 2026-27 or dies as a podcast footnote is the story worth watching now.
