Juraj Slafkovsky has earned another major honor away from Montreal as Martin St-Louis prepares to lean on him again next season.
The Montreal Canadiens forward has been named an honorary citizen of Budimir, Slovakia, the village where he grew up before becoming the first overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.
Montreal highlighted the recognition publicly, putting another spotlight on how large Slafkovsky's profile has become in his home country.
“For his outstanding sporting achievements, Juraj Slafkovsky has been named an honorary citizen of the village of Budimir, Slovakia!” the Canadiens announced.
It's a personal honor for a player whose hockey career took him from a small Slovak community all the way to one of the NHL's biggest markets.
And Slafkovsky is returning home after his strongest NHL season yet. He finished the campaign with 30 goals and 43 assists for 73 points across 82 games.

The recognition also comes at an interesting stage of Slafkovsky's development in Montreal. He isn't simply the former No. 1 pick carrying expectations anymore.
At 22, he's becoming an established offensive piece for the Canadiens, and his latest production raised the bar for what St-Louis can expect from him moving forward.
That rise has also made Slafkovsky one of Slovakia's most recognizable hockey players, with his progress in Montreal followed closely back home.
For Budimir, the connection runs even deeper. Slafkovsky grew up there long before NHL arenas, draft-night attention and a permanent place inside Montreal's top six became part of his life.
Being named an honorary citizen now ties his biggest professional accomplishments directly back to the community where that journey started.
The Canadiens aren't hiding their appreciation for the moment either. Their public message turned a hometown distinction into another reminder of just how far Slafkovsky has come.
The next challenge will unfold on the ice, where St-Louis remains Montreal's head coach and Slafkovsky will enter the season carrying expectations created by his own breakout production.
