The Panthers instead reshaped the crease by acquiring Jacob Markstrom and Akira Schmid, closing the door on another Bobrovsky season in South Florida.
Toronto accepted a different type of risk. Hiller now gets an accomplished veteran in goal, but the Leafs have also given Bobrovsky the security that Florida refused to put into the contract.
That puts even more attention on his performance once puck drop arrives. Toronto didn't just pay for a goaltender; it made the contractual concession that decided where he would play.
