Ivan Miroshnichenko could give Jim Hiller another scoring option if the Washington Capitals expose him to waivers.
Toronto enters camp with a rebuilt roster, but John Chayka may still need one more forward and another puck-moving defenseman.
Miroshnichenko stands out because Washington's forward group is crowded. The 22-year-old has produced 13 points across 52 NHL games over 3 seasons.
The Capitals also added Alex Tuch and expect Ilya Protas to push for work. That could squeeze Miroshnichenko despite 3 productive AHL seasons.
Toronto would be betting on upside rather than proven NHL results. A 6-foot-2 right-shot winger with scoring tools would give Hiller another option around the top six.
The waiver route also matters because the Maple Leafs wouldn't need to surrender a draft pick or prospect to add him.

Koivunen scored 2 goals and 7 points in 39 NHL games last season. His AHL work was stronger, with 13 goals and 41 points across 34 games.

His ability to play center or wing would help Toronto cover injuries and move pieces around the middle six without changing the entire lineup.
Scott Morrow could address the blue line. The 22-year-old right-shot defenseman recorded 19 points in 34 AHL games and added 6 assists in 29 NHL appearances.

Toronto already added Darren Raddysh and brought back Chris Tanev, but durability and puck movement remain concerns behind the established group.
Morrow would give Hiller a younger depth option capable of moving the puck instead of filling a limited seventh-defenseman role.
None of these players is guaranteed to reach waivers. Trades, injuries or late contracts could change each situation before opening night.
Still, Chayka should be watching closely. Miroshnichenko offers the highest offensive upside, Koivunen brings versatility, and Morrow addresses a clear blue-line need.
