Alexander Nikishin's reported contract demand gives Rod Brind'Amour and the Carolina Hurricanes a major decision on the blue line.
Daria Tuboltseva reports that Nikishin is seeking more than $8,000,000 per season on his next agreement.
That price would immediately place him among Carolina's highest-paid players. It would also establish expectations normally attached to a proven top-pair defenseman.
The Hurricanes clearly value Nikishin's long-term upside, but Eric Tulsky must decide how much projection he's willing to buy with one contract.
Paying him now could look smart if Nikishin develops into the blue-line anchor Carolina expects. Waiting could produce a larger bill after a breakout season.
The risk is committing elite money before the Hurricanes know exactly how much offense, special-teams value and difficult deployment he can handle over a full schedule.

Brind'Amour's system demands mobility, pressure and quick puck movement from every defenseman. Nikishin's next deal suggests his camp expects him to become far more than a supporting piece.
An $8,000,000-plus cap hit would move him close to Connor Hellebuyck's $8,500,000 number and within range of established defensemen carrying major roles across the league.
It would also leave Nikishin below Cale Makar's $9,000,000 cap hit, but the comparison still shows how quickly the defense market has climbed.
Tulsky must protect Carolina's flexibility. One oversized projection deal could make it harder to retain depth, support the top six or react at the trade deadline.
A shorter bridge contract would reduce the immediate risk, yet Nikishin's camp may prefer long-term security before his value has another chance to rise.
The Hurricanes could also use term to control the annual cost. A longer agreement above $8,000,000 may age well if Nikishin becomes the club's first option in every major situation.
This negotiation is no longer about whether Carolina believes in Nikishin. It's about whether the Hurricanes are ready to pay him like a finished star before he fully becomes one.
