Morgan Rielly's future is back under scrutiny as Jim Hiller prepares the Toronto Maple Leafs for another season.
Jeff Marek said Rielly's name has circulated around the league for years, with other teams repeatedly calling Toronto about the defenseman.
Those inquiries didn't begin under one management group. Marek traced the interest back through the Brad Treliving era and even earlier under Kyle Dubas.
That history matters because it shows Rielly isn't connected to one isolated summer rumor. Rival clubs have viewed him as a possible target across several seasons.
There's no indication that Toronto is actively shopping him or that a trade is close. But persistent calls can force management to keep evaluating the market.
Rielly remains one of the Maple Leafs' most recognizable players and a major piece of their blue line, making any serious discussion difficult to ignore.

Keeping Rielly also carries expectations. Toronto needs stronger defensive structure, cleaner exits and more consistent results from a blue line that has faced heavy criticism.
The Maple Leafs shouldn't move him only because calls keep arriving. Interest becomes meaningful only when another club offers a return that changes Toronto's balance.
That could mean a younger defenseman, top-six help or enough flexibility to reshape multiple parts of the lineup. A routine package wouldn't justify the disruption.
The repeated interest does give Toronto leverage. Management can listen without pressure, compare offers and wait for one team to become aggressive.
Rielly's name has survived multiple regimes because his situation remains complicated. He brings value, history and a defined role, yet other teams clearly believe he may be obtainable.
