Gavin McKenna told Jim Hiller he expects a different rookie path after joining a Toronto Maple Leafs roster built to chase the playoffs.
The first overall pick said most players selected at the top enter teams deep in a rebuild. McKenna believes Toronto gives him a rare chance to compete immediately.
“I know I've gotten lucky,” McKenna told ESPN, pointing to the aggressive roster work completed by general manager John Chayka.
Toronto added Sergei Bobrovsky, Nick Paul, Brandon Duhaime, Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger and Jack Roslovic after missing the postseason last season.
That disappointment led to a draft-lottery win and McKenna's arrival. Instead of carrying a stripped-down roster, the 18-year-old enters a locker room with established NHL support.
McKenna produced 51 points in 35 NCAA games at Penn State and earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honours before Toronto selected him first overall.
"It's pretty common that players who get drafted first overall go to a team that's tanking, and that's not the case for me," McKenna said. "I know I've gotten lucky."
"You see what Chayka is doing. You see the players he's bringing in. I think we obviously want to go on a run this year," McKenna also said.

His comment will draw comparisons to other top picks, but the larger message was about expectations. McKenna doesn't plan to treat his rookie season as a long development exercise.
He has already started building a relationship with Auston Matthews, giving Toronto's newest forward direct access to the captain and the club's most established scorer.
That support can ease some of the burden. McKenna won't need to drive the top line from opening night or become the only source of excitement around the team.
But Toronto brings a different kind of pressure. Every healthy scratch, scoring drought or line change will be examined far more closely than it would be on a quiet rebuilding club.
Hiller must balance opportunity with protection. McKenna needs skilled linemates and offensive touches, but he also needs room to adjust without every mistake turning into a larger debate.
Chayka's additions suggest the Maple Leafs want to surround him with veteran structure. Bobrovsky stabilizes the crease, while the new forwards add matchup options and bottom-six depth.
McKenna could now chase the Calder Trophy while helping Toronto return to the playoffs in the same season. That's uncommon territory for a first overall pick.
He called himself lucky, but the situation comes with real stakes. Toronto didn't draft McKenna to wait quietly; the Maple Leafs expect him to grow while the team wins.
