Mathew Barzal is the name floating through hockey circles this week, and the Islanders have nobody to blame but their own season.
A fan post tagging Oilers insider Mike Bartner went viral Thursday night, floating Barzal in Edmonton colours instead of Islanders blue.
The Islanders finished 43-34-5 for 91 points, good for 19th overall in the league and sixth in the Metro.
They closed the year on a three-game slide, going 3-7-0 over their final ten, with a minus-8 goal differential to show for it.
Barzal still put up 72 points on the year, 19 goals and 53 assists across 81 games, with a plus-10 rating and four game-winners.
But his final ten games told a rougher story. Seven points, one goal, six assists, and a minus-4 stretch that mirrored the whole roster around him.
He carries a $9,150,000 cap hit at 29 years old, the kind of number that makes a rebuilding club pause and a contender think twice.
Barzal's production cooled exactly when Islanders needed it most
Watching him over that final stretch felt like watching a Ferrari stuck behind a school bus. All that speed, nowhere to actually go.
The graphic behind the rumor dropped him straight into an Oilers third jersey, cap number stamped under his chin, no Islanders logo anywhere in sight.
Would Barzal look good in Oilers colours? Sure. Would he look better on almost any healthier roster right now? Also sure.
The Oilers finished 41-30-11 for 93 points, 14th overall, with a plus-13 differential and a six-game stretch of 6-2-2 to close things out.
Here's the twist nobody's talking about. The Islanders swept the season series against Edmonton, winning 4-2 at home and 1-0 on the road.
Peter DeBoer inherited this Islanders group in April, and Mathieu Darche has a full offseason to decide whether Barzal fits what comes next.
