Braeden Cootes is wearing a letter for his country, and the Vancouver Canucks have to like what that says about their prospect pipeline.
Cootes was tabbed as captain for Canada at the World Junior Summer Showcase, a real vote of confidence from the staff running that program.
He didn't downplay what it means either.
"Any time you have that on, especially a Canada jersey, is such an honour and very proud of that," Cootes said.
That's the kind of response that lands well with a fan base still working through a full rebuild.
Coach Misha Donskov didn't hold back on why Cootes got the nod in the first place.
"He's got a lot of respect in our room. A guy that's a consistent every day-er," Donskov said.
That's not flashy language, but it's exactly the kind of endorsement that matters most to scouts and front offices watching from home.

Consistency isn't a glamorous trait, but it's often the difference between a prospect who stalls and one who actually sticks in an NHL lineup.
Vancouver finished dead last overall this past season at 25-49-8, and every bit of good news out of the prospect pipeline carries extra weight right now.
This is already shaping up to be a busy summer for Canucks prospects at this event. Braeden Cootes, Niklas Aaram-Olsen's Combine numbers, and Brooks Rogowski's early buzz have all made noise in recent weeks.
None of that guarantees anything at the NHL level down the road. Leadership in a summer showcase and leadership in an NHL room are two very different tests.
But respect from teammates and coaches doesn't get manufactured. Either a player has earned it in the room or he hasn't, and Donskov's comments suggest Cootes has.
Would Vancouver's front office view this captaincy as validation of where Cootes fits, or just a nice moment in an otherwise unremarkable event?
Either way, a rebuilding organization needs prospects who show up in these smaller moments just as much as it needs the ones who post gaudy numbers.
Cootes still has real development ahead of him before any of this translates into an NHL role. But wearing the C for his country this week is exactly the kind of signal worth tracking.
