There's no indication that a deal is close. But renewed calls suggest Jason Botterill wants to understand McCann's value before deciding whether to keep him in the top six.
McCann's flexibility expands the field. He can play center or wing, finish chances and move into several power-play roles without forcing a complete lineup overhaul.
The New York Rangers stand out after their continued search for more firepower. Mike Sullivan could use McCann on the wing or move him through the middle when injuries hit.

The Toronto Maple Leafs could revisit another former player as Jim Hiller looks for support around Auston Matthews. McCann's ability to shift positions would help a top six carrying major expectations.
Florida presents a different opportunity. Paul Maurice could use McCann as another direct shooter who can move between scoring lines without needing to control every possession.
The Panthers' challenge would be making the roster mechanics work. Seattle won't move McCann simply to create space, and Florida would need to send meaningful value back.
New Jersey also belongs in the conversation. Sheldon Keefe has skilled centers who could create shooting opportunities for McCann, while his positional range would give the Devils insurance across the lineup.
The Rangers may carry the clearest need, but Pittsburgh could have the strongest motivation if it wants immediate offense without committing to a larger roster reset.
Toronto would bring the biggest spotlight. Any McCann reunion would revive memories of losing him during the Seattle expansion process and place instant pressure on management to justify the price.
