Kirill Marchenko may be nearing an exit as Rick Bowness prepares the Columbus Blue Jackets for a major roster shakeup.
A source close to Marchenko told RG.org that the winger is effectively caught between 2 teams, with the parties negotiating the final trade terms.
The report marks a sharp turn after Don Waddell said earlier this month that Marchenko would be with Columbus when the season begins.
The Blue Jackets weren't actively shopping him, but they remained willing to listen. Those conversations now appear to have advanced well beyond the exploratory stage.
Marchenko's production explains the attention. He recorded 27 goals and 67 points across 76 games in 2025-26.
He also led Columbus in goals for a third straight season, making any potential deal more than a routine summer roster adjustment.

That contract question carries real weight. Marchenko is entering the final season of a 3-year agreement with a $3,850,000 average annual value.
He can become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights after 2026-27. An acquiring club would need to decide whether it's buying one season or a long-term piece.

For Columbus, that uncertainty may be driving the timing. Waiting could produce another strong season, but it could also strengthen Marchenko's leverage during the next negotiation.
Montreal's appeal is easy to understand. Marchenko offers size, finishing ability and a right-shot scoring option who could immediately compete for top-six minutes.
The Canadiens would still need to meet Columbus' asking price and satisfy Marchenko's camp. Waddell has little reason to move a productive winger without receiving meaningful NHL value.
The talks have now reached the point where the next development could come quickly. Marchenko entered the summer as a player Columbus expected to keep, but he may leave it wearing a different jersey.
