Matthew Schaefer, the New York Islanders' 18 year old blueliner, sent Gavin McKenna a message this week that's already spreading.

"He's a great player, and he's going to do great things," Schaefer said. No hedging. No coach speak.

That's notable, coming from someone who lived exactly what McKenna is about to walk into.

Schaefer posted 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points in 82 games this past season as a rookie defenseman. That kind of production from the back end doesn't happen by accident.

He added eight power play goals and ten power play assists, plus four game winners, while carrying a plus-13 rating over a full campaign.

Why McKenna's welcome to Toronto won't be gentle

McKenna is walking into a much messier situation than Schaefer did. Toronto went 32-36-14 this past season, finished with 78 points, and allowed 299 goals against.

A minus-46 goal differential and a seven-game losing streak to close things out. That's the wreckage the Maple Leafs are trying to clear before their new franchise piece even laces up.

Jim Hiller inherits a roster that closed the year 2-7-1 in its final ten games. There's no easing McKenna into that.

Schaefer, by contrast, landed on an Islanders team that finished 43-34-5 with 91 points. Not a contender exactly, but a functioning organization with real structure around it.
