Darnell Nurse and Mike Babcock are now driving Edmonton's biggest roster question as the Oilers push for more trade options.
That is the real shift from Elliotte Friedman's latest note. Edmonton would like Nurse to consider more teams, with Anaheim already tied to the file and San Jose now mentioned too.
The key part is not only the market. It is the geography. Friedman's read was that he just does not know if Nurse wants to go west, and that keeps the Oilers from opening this thing as wide as they would like.
That matters because Edmonton is not trying to move a depth contract. Nurse is signed through 2029-30 at a 9.25 million cap hit, which means every possible trade has to work on the ice and on the books.
The player still has value. Nurse played all 82 games in 2025-26 and finished with 7 goals and 24 points, so teams can still sell themselves on a big left-shot defender who handles heavy work.
That is why this file keeps hanging over Edmonton's summer. The Oilers are not deciding whether Nurse can still play. They are deciding whether moving his contract gives Babcock a better roster to coach right now.

But if Nurse does not want a Western move, Edmonton is back to a narrower list, and that makes every negotiation harder. That is why Friedman's wording matters so much.
The Oilers also are not forced into blind panic. PuckPedia shows they still have projected cap room, which means Bowman does not need to dump Nurse just to make one headline before July.
That does not make the situation clean. It just means patience still has value, especially with multiple clubs circling and the contract still heavy enough to demand a real return.
