Wotherspoon, by comparison, put up 3 goals and 30 points in 80 games for Pittsburgh at a $1,000,000 cap hit, going plus-17. With Pittsburgh retaining half his salary, Vegas effectively gets him at roughly $500,000 against the cap.
That retention detail matters. GM Kelly McCrimmon clearly wanted Wotherspoon's offensive instincts on the back end without paying full freight for him.
Penguins add a younger, cheaper option to their blue line
Pittsburgh finished 41-25-16 this season, tenth overall with 98 points, before losing in six games to Philadelphia in the first round. GM Kyle Dubas is clearly retooling pieces around an aging core.
Korczak, at 25, fits a younger profile than what Pittsburgh has been carrying on defense. Erik Karlsson is 36. Kristopher Letang is 39.
Adding a cost-controlled 25-year-old gives the organization a long-term option that doesn't pressure the cap.
He also brings playoff experience, having appeared in 13 games for Vegas this past postseason as the Knights advanced three rounds before losing to Carolina.
That's real exposure to high-stakes hockey for a player still on an entry-level type deal.
Neither player is a headline name.
But trades like this one shape depth charts more than splashy moves ever do, and both front offices clearly got something specific they were looking for.
