John Tortorella isn't ready to talk about his future in Vegas. Hours after losing the Stanley Cup Final, he says he needs to digest it first.

Per SinBin.vegas, Tortorella admitted he hasn't even thought about coaching the team moving forward. He needs to process the loss, then he'll figure it out.

It's a raw, non-committal answer, the kind you get from a coach whose season just ended in the cruelest way.

So don't over-read it. A man who came that close to a Cup isn't going to map out next season at the podium. Processing first is human.

But the uncertainty is real enough to flag.

His comments landed almost immediately after the final horn.

A March hire who came within reach of the Cup

Here's the context that makes this fascinating. Tortorella was hired late, on March 29, and still drove Vegas all the way to the Stanley Cup Final.

Sit with that for a second. A coach who took over near the end of the regular season guided this team to within a few games of a championship. That's a remarkable stretch by any measure.

And the Final was a war. The officiating grievances, from the disallowed Barbashev goal to the Hertl call. The William Karlsson injury. A cold finish from Mitch Marner. Tortorella navigated all of it to a Game 6 with the Cup in reach.

Given that run, you'd think Vegas wants him back, and you'd think he'd want to finish the job he nearly pulled off.

Here's my read: "I need to digest this" is a coach who just had his heart ripped out, not necessarily one heading for the exit. Don't confuse grief with a decision.

Coaches say a lot of raw things in the minutes after a loss like this. Most of it shouldn't be taken as a final word.

Still, the question is now live. Does Tortorella return to chase what slipped away, or does this loss change his thinking?

Vegas just added a coaching question nobody expected to be asking. The answer waits until the sting fades, and that takes longer than a press conference.
