William Karlsson and John Tortorella just got the update Vegas feared most at the worst possible time.

Tortorella confirmed Karlsson will miss Game 6, and that alone is a huge blow because the Golden Knights are facing elimination. NHL.com reported Saturday that Karlsson will not be available, after leaving Game 5 in the second period of a 4-2 loss in Carolina.

The deeper problem is that this does not look like a one-game issue. NHL.com reported Karlsson could miss the rest of the Stanley Cup Final, and ESPN's injury note also pointed to the strong belief that he is unlikely to return.

That changes the whole feel of the series for Vegas. Karlsson is not some replaceable bottom-six winger. He is one of the centers that keeps the lineup balanced when the matchups get tight.

The injury itself looked bad right away. NHL.com and Sportsnet both described it as an apparent left arm injury after Sean Walker drove Karlsson into the boards at 8:19 of the second period in Game 5.

You could see it in the way he reacted. He was favoring the arm almost immediately, and once a player like that heads down the tunnel in June, teams usually already know the situation is serious.

Golden Knights fans are stunned after horrible news was followed by a major announcement

Because Karlsson was giving Vegas real two-way value all spring. He had 9 points in 15 playoff games before the injury, and he was averaging 17:12 a night in the postseason.

That matters more than one scoring line. Karlsson takes hard minutes, supports the penalty kill, and helps keep the middle of the ice stable. Coaches build around that kind of center in a Final.

Vegas also does not have much room left for adjustment. Lose a winger and you can juggle lines. Lose one of your trusted centers with your season on the line, and the whole bench has to stretch.

That is why Tortorella's confirmation hit so hard. Missing Game 6 is bad enough. The bigger fear is that Vegas may already be trying to survive the rest of this series without one of its most important forwards.

For the Golden Knights, this is not just another injury update. William Karlsson's absence may be the thing that decides whether their season ends now or somehow gets pushed one more game.
