The Dallas Stars are moving north, and a lot of fans aren't happy about it.

The team has selected the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano as the site for their new arena and entertainment district. The Stars submitted a letter of intent to the Plano City Council, which will vote on the project Monday.

That's a major franchise relocation within the Metroplex. The Stars are leaving the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas behind. The new development would land the team firmly in the northern suburbs.

Fort Worth Stars fans are taking the news hard. Plano sits roughly an hour from Fort Worth on a good traffic day. The trip to downtown Dallas was already long. The trip to Plano is borderline impossible for a weeknight game.

This also crosses a strange threshold for the Dallas sports brand. The Cowboys play in Arlington. The Rangers play in Arlington. Now the Stars are reportedly heading to Plano. One-quarter of the city's professional teams will actually play inside Dallas city limits.

The franchise itself is in a strong place on the ice. The Stars finished 3rd overall this season at 50-20-12 with 112 points. The product is one of the best in the league. The infrastructure decision is the part fans are arguing about.

Why this move matters for the on-ice future too

A new arena and entertainment district means a major revenue upgrade for ownership. Premium seating. Naming rights. Year-round events. That kind of money funnels into hockey operations over time if the team is committed to spending it.

GM Jim Nill has built one of the most balanced contender rosters in the league. The financial flexibility of a brand-new building expands what's possible at the trade deadline and in free agency.

The fan experience is the harder part of the conversation. Downtown Dallas had public transit options. Plano is car-dependent for most fans. The commute calculus changes overnight.

Honestly, this is the kind of relocation decision that ownership groups make for the next 30 years, not the next three. The complaints are real. The math behind the move is also real.

Plano City Council votes Monday. That's the next step. The Stars need approval to actually break ground on the project.

The Dallas Stars are still the Dallas Stars on paper. The home address is going to look very different starting in a few years. Fort Worth fans will have to decide how committed they really are.
