The Carolina Hurricanes organization planned a moment of silence before Game 5 against the Montreal Canadiens to honor the passing of Claude Lemieux.
Then a single fan in the stands started shouting Lemieux's name. Then a few more joined in. Within seconds, the moment of silence transformed into a full-arena celebration.
Honestly, this was the perfect way to send Lemieux off.

A moment of silence is traditional. A spontaneous cheer is unforgettable. The Hurricanes fans got it exactly right without any of them needing to plan it.
Anthony Martineau of TVA Sports captured the scene and shared it on X. The official Canadiens account also acknowledged the gesture from the Carolina organization.
Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final is the kind of stage where every moment is amplified. The PNC Arena was already humming with the intensity of an elimination scenario.
The Habs went into the night needing a win to extend their series. Carolina entered as the 2nd-ranked team in the league at 53-22-7 with 113 points and a plus-56 goal differential.
Montreal finished 6th overall at 48-24-10 with 106 points. The Habs have been pushing every game in this series despite an avalanche of officiating storylines going the wrong way.
Lemieux wore the Montreal Canadiens uniform during his career. He won his first Stanley Cup with the Habs in 1986. Hurricanes fans honoring him in Carolina, with the Habs sweater on the visiting team, carried a layered kind of meaning.
There's also the 2000 Devils connection nobody can stop mentioning. Lemieux was on the only team in NHL history to come back from a 3-1 deficit in a conference final. That precedent now hangs over Montreal as they fight to extend this series.

The Hurricanes organization deserves credit for planning the tribute in the first place. Lemieux had no formal connection to Carolina. The respect for his career still cleared the room.
Martin St-Louis and Rod Brind'Amour both played in the same era Lemieux competed in. Both benches will remember the moment as long as the rink stands.
Whether the Habs use the emotion of the tribute to fuel a historic comeback is a story still being written. The night already gave hockey something special before the puck even dropped.
The crowd reaction told the truth. Lemieux mattered. The cheer made sure he heard it one last time.
