The framing came from Friedman. Would Henrik refuse to draft any player who can't beat him up the Grouse Grind?
His answer was short. "Then we couldn't draft anyone. It's impossible. We can't do that."
For a franchise that just wrapped a 25-49-8 season and finished 32nd overall, this isn't a throwaway quote. It hints at how the front office actually evaluates talent.
Adam Foote inherited a roster that gave up 316 goals and scored 216. The fitness bar in Vancouver isn't a punchline. It's part of the rebuild conversation.
But Henrik's response says something else. The Grouse Grind is a brutal North Vancouver climb, the kind of thing only a Sedin would treat as a baseline. Holding NHL draft picks to that standard is comedy, not strategy.
What Henrik's answer reveals about the Canucks' rebuild path
The Canucks went 9-27-5 at Rogers Arena this season. Home ice was a problem all year, and the goal differential of -100 wasn't a soft landing.
A team that finishes dead last needs draft hits, not gimmicks. Henrik gets that. His response was a polite way of saying the bar can't be him.

Foote is one year into the job after being hired May 14, 2025. He needs reinforcements at every level. Picking based on hill-climb times wouldn't get any of them.
