Sebastian Cossa and Kris Knoblauch are now tied to Edmonton's biggest offseason problem: the crease.

The new buzz around the Oilers points toward Detroit's goalie pipeline as a possible answer. Bob Stauffer suggested Edmonton could target a prospect netminder from an Eastern team carrying 4 strong young goalies, and that quickly turned the spotlight toward the Red Wings.

That link is easy to understand. Detroit has one of the deepest goalie pools in hockey right now, and Cossa is widely viewed as the headliner of that group.

Trey Augustine is in the mix too after an award-winning season at Michigan State. Michal Postava has taken over plenty of starts in Grand Rapids, and Rudy Guimond just posted an 8-1-0 playoff run in the QMJHL.

Sooner or later, that kind of depth forces a decision. One goalie usually winds up becoming the chip that helps solve another roster problem.

Edmonton's need is obvious. The article points out that the Oilers posted some of the worst goaltending numbers in the league this season, and that keeps dragging them back into the same summer conversation.

This is not a brand-new connection either. Cam Robinson previously linked the Oilers to Detroit's goalie system, with Trey Augustine described as a non-starter when Edmonton checked in.

«Edmonton's goalie situation has been a problem for years, and now it sounds like they may finally be looking toward Detroit's pipeline for answers. When names like Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine keep coming up around the Oilers, you know this is becoming a very serious story.» - Jacob Rivard, Octopus Thrower

Behind-the-scenes push underway for Oilers' top goalie target

That is what makes this rumor worth watching. The Oilers are in win-now mode, and every bad year in net turns up the heat around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl even more.

Detroit, on the other hand, does not need to rush. Steve Yzerman can sit on that goalie depth and wait for the kind of offer that actually hurts Edmonton to make.

That is where the deal gets messy. The file you shared makes it clear the Oilers do not have much prospect capital, their farm system was ranked 30th out of 32 by The Athletic, and they do not have a 1st-round pick in the next 2 drafts.

«I've been told they've contacted Detroit. I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine, and think it was just a non-starter.» The Oilers' interest in Detroit's goalie prospects clearly isn't new, and this latest report suggests Edmonton may still be pushing hard to land a long-term answer in net. - Cam Robinson, Elite Prospects

So even if Edmonton wants Cossa or another young goalie badly, the package is not simple. Quinn Hutson was mentioned as a possible piece, and future 1st-rounders in 2028 or 2029 were floated too.

From Detroit's side, that still might not be enough. Moving one of Cossa, Postava, Augustine, or Guimond only makes sense if the return clearly beats the value of just keeping the pipeline intact.

That is why Sebastian Cossa is such an interesting name in this story. He fits Edmonton's biggest need almost perfectly, but the Oilers may not have the right assets to make Detroit blink.
