Markus Naslund and Adam Foote now sit beside a Canucks front-office search that feels more political than simple.

Rick Dhaliwal's update is the part that jumps. He said Francesco Aquilini has his own list of names, and it would not surprise him if that list includes former Canucks like Naslund and Roberto Luongo.

That matters right away because it says this search may not be driven only by résumés, interviews, and modern front-office planning.

It says ownership taste could still shape the room. And in Vancouver, that is always the first thing people watch.

Dhaliwal's wording also fits what fans already fear. Aquilini likes players connected to the franchise from the past, which means legacy and familiarity may be carrying real weight in this process.

That does not make Naslund or Luongo bad ideas on its own. Both names bring instant credibility with the market and with the fan base.

The issue is what kind of job Vancouver is really trying to fill. If this is about sentiment and comfort, that is one thing. If it is about finding the best executive to run a rebuild, that is another.

Rick Dhaliwal: Re Canucks management search: Francesco Aquilini's got a list of guys, it wouldn't surprise me if on Aquilini's list is former players like Markus Naslund, Roberto Luongo; the owner likes players who are connected to the team from the past - Donnie & Dhali (4/27)

A new Canucks GM rumor just revealed something unexpected

The broader reporting adds a lot here. The first round is wrapping up quickly, a short list is expected soon, and 15 to 20 league executives have already taken part in video calls.

That tells you Vancouver is casting a huge net. Kevyn Adams, Shane Doan, Ray Whitney, and Bill Scott are all part of the visible pool, and those names alone show a wide search.

It also matters that this is not being handled by Jim Rutherford alone. The reporting says the process is collaborative, and final in-person interviews with ownership are expected once the short list is set.

That last part is the key. Ownership will be in the room when this gets serious. So Dhaliwal's comment about Aquilini's personal list does not feel like background noise.

The search is also supposed to be more about turnaround plans than pure experience. That is important, because it suggests Vancouver wants ideas and commitment to a rebuild, not just a familiar title.

Still, nearly all other hockey business is on pause while this plays out, including the fate of Foote behind the bench. That raises the stakes on every delay and every influence battle.

So this is where the Canucks sit now. The process looks broad and active, but the bigger question has not changed.

Is Vancouver hiring the sharpest builder, or the person ownership feels best about bringing closest to the franchise name?
