While many are wondering what happened to former NHLer Jimmy Hayes to cause his death recently at the young age of 31, it looks like we'll be waiting a while for the official word. According to a report by the Boston Globe, Hayes autopsy has been completed, but the cause of death is still undetermined.

"OCME (Office of the Chief Medical Examiner) has completed an autopsy in this case," said a spokesperson in an emailed statement to the Globe. "The cause and manner of death remain pending and an update is not expected for several weeks when toxicology testing comes back."

Toxicology reports can contain information on prescription and/or recreational drugs that might be in the system, or any other potentially poisonous materials. These tests would be routine in cases like this where the cause of death isn't obvious.

Hayes was found dead in his home in Milton, Massachusetts home two days ago. While little information has been made public on the circumstances of his passing, police have called it "sudden." His death shocked many in the hockey world, and tributes have poured in steadily since. He leaves behind a wife and two young sons. His brother Kevin plays with the Philadelphia Flyers. Hayes' family is asking anyone who wants to honour his memory to make a donation to Dorchester Youth Hockey.
