After spending parts of the last sixteen seasons in the National Hockey League, Valterri Filppula is heading overseas. The 37-year-old has signed a one-year contract with Geneve-Servette HC in Switzerland's top division, National League.

"When we approached Valtteri, he was immediately interested in the project. He is exactly the player we were looking for to help the team this season. He's capable of playing multiple positions, he's great on power-play and penalty-killing and on top of that he's a winner. We are very proud to be able to count on him this season," said Marc Gautschi, Geneve-Servette's sports director.

The Vantaa, Finland played with Detroit, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, and the New York Islanders. In 1,056 regular season games, Filppula had 530 points (197 G, 333 A), 346 penalty minutes, and was a -4. He also appeared in 166 career playoff games where he tallied 86 points (25 G, 61 A), 38 penalty minutes, and was a +4. Filppula won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Detroit Red Wings in 2008.

"I am very happy to join the team! I only heard good things about the organization, the city and the fans. I can't wait for things to start, keenly on Friday," Filppula said.

According to the club's press release, Filppula will arrive on Friday and has been assigned the number 51, which he wore throughout his time in the NHL.
