After a year with the Toronto Marlies and Maple Leafs, forward Scott Sabourin has returned to the Ottawa Senators. Sabourin, who played for the Sens during the 2019-20 season, has signed a one-year contract with Ottawa worth $700,000 at the NHL level, and $200,000 in the AHL.

"Scott is a player and person with whom the organization has familiarity," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "He plays hard, has a physical presence, is respected on the ice and maintains strong leadership qualities. We'll look to him to help guide our younger players and prospects."

Sabourin, 29, was never drafted and has spent the vast majority of his pro hockey career playing in the American Hockey League. He has been a member of the LA Kings, Minnesota Wild and Anaheim Ducks, but never suited up for any of those teams at the NHL level. While he's only played a total of 36 NHL games, his name is recognizable due to an incident in November of 2019 while he was playing with Ottawa. Sabourin had a head-to-head collision with David Backes, who was then playing for the Boston Bruins. He would have to be stretchered off the ice and missed several weeks of playing due to a concussion. Sabourin was also involved in an incident in a preseason game against the Toronto Maple Leafs where Auston Matthews made a point of looking at the name on the back of his jersey as a way of saying "who the hell is this guy?"
