NHL Blocks Colorado Avalanche From Re-Acquiring Mikko Rantanen

As of late, there's been speculation about Colorado potentially looking to re-acquire Mikko Rantanen, but now Elliotte Friedman has shut that talk down as it has been revealed the NHL have a rule that would prevent the Avalanche from landing their star forward again this season.

This season, the Colorado Avalanche made the shocking decision to trade Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes, with speculation now emerging that they could look to flip him after he seemingly doesn't want to lock in for the long-term with the 'Canes.

Unsurprisingly, this has led to chatter that the Colorado Avalanche could potentially be in the market to re-acquire their former superstar forward, and with the Hurricanes or a third-team potentially set to retain money on a deal, it could mean a cheap addition for the Avs.

Now however, Elliotte Friedman has shut down those talks immediately, revealing a rule within the NHL that states a team may not acquire a player they traded away in the same season at a discounted price as a result of salary cap retention.

Friedman did however reveal that a players salary can be retained twice in the same season if it's to move that player to a different team, with 50% retained by Chicago already meaning that another team could retain 50% of the remaining money left on Rantanen's deal.

At this point in time, with the star forward not wanting to remain in Carolina long-term, all signs are pointing to it being a matter of when, not if he is traded ahead of the March 7th deadline, meaning that we could be in for a crazy 10 days as the NHL's regular season continues to heat up in a big way.
