Fire Sale: Bruins Journalist Calls on GM Don Sweeney to Face Reality

Boston Bruins reporter Jimmy Murphy called out team general manager Don Sweeney tonight, asking him to face the music.

The era of the Boston Bruins ruling over the Atlantic Division is over.

In fact, the team's competitive window may have just slammed shut once and for all.

Currently, the team is 6th place in the division with a 27-24-6 record, two points out of the last playoff spot in the conference.

The team is just 5-5-0 over their last ten games, and they boast a troubling -25 goal differential, which would suggest more bad news in the future for the team.

As a result, there has been a lot of speculation around the team, with some even suggesting that Brad Marchand could be on the trade block.

Bruins reporter Jimmy Murphy is on the side of a rebuild. He thinks that the Bruins should embrace it now, to ease the pain in the long-term.

He called out general manager Don Sweeney tonight, saying that there should be a big "for sale" sign behind him during his next media availability.

The bruins do have a couple of notable pending unrestricted free agents this summer, most notably Brad Marchand and Trent Fredrick.

It would probably come as a shock if the team moved their captain, especially if they are still in the playoff race, but it is pretty clear that the team is no longer a contender, even if they can squeak into the playoffs.

Furthermore, Marchand is not getting any younger. At 36 years old, who knows how much more he has left in the tank?

He has shown signs of decline this season with just 44 points in 57 games, roughly the same pace he scored at last year when he tallied 67 points in 82 games.

That being said, he is still the team's most valuable trade asset should Sweeney consider that move.

Marchand does have an 8-team no-trade list, so he could potentially deny a trade making the process slightly more difficult for the team.
