Boston Bruins Team Doctor Reveals What Really Happened With Charlie McAvoy: It's Worse Than We Thought
The doctor of the Boston Bruins has revealed to the public just how bad Charlie McAvoy's infection is, which is causing him to miss significant time.
Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is still in the hospital after having an irrigation and debridement procedure to clear an infection in his right shoulder.
McAvoy sat out Team USA's 4 Nations game Monday versus Sweden due to an upper-body injury suffered in Saturday's win over Canada. Bruins head team physician Peter Asnis said McAvoy's condition is improving.
"He underwent treatment, which was administered by Team USA's medical staff. Upon returning to Boston, he developed increasing pain, for which he was evaluated by the Boston Bruins medical staff. After undergoing x-rays, MRIs, and bloodwork, he was diagnosed as having an infection in his right shoulder, as well as a significant injury to his AC joint.
"He underwent an irrigation and debridement procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital on February 18. He remains in the hospital, where he is being treated with IV antibiotics, and his condition is improving."
The 27-year-old played 19:45 against Finland and 19:27 against Canada but failed to record a point in the tournament.
In his absence, Team USA depended on Jaccob Slavin and Brock Faber, who both received over 25 minutes of ice time and Noah Hanifin, who played a shade under 20.
With McAvoy out, Quinn Hughes was put on standby but can be added to the lineup only if another defenseman is injured. It was unclear as of Tuesday evening if he would make the trip to Boston.
Jake Sanderson is McAvoy's replacement
Hughes was originally left off of Team USA's roster because of his injury, and Jake Sanderson took his place.
Sanderson made his tournament debut against Team Sweden, playing 17:08, and he will now fill in for McAvoy in the title game against Canada tomorrow night.
McAvoy has scored seven goals and 23 points in 50 games with the Bruins this season and leads the team in average ice time at 23:40. He is signed through the 2029-30 season with a $9.5 million cap hit.
