Today Philadelphia Flyers GM Danny Briere has finally opened up regarding the trade that the Flyers made to send away two beloved players Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee.

On Thursday night the Flyers made a major trade with the Calgary Flames sending away two of their core forwards.

Since the trade was made by Danny Briere and the Flyers it has been met with mixed reception some fans believe it was the right move while others believe Briere made a panic trade.

With the mixed reception on the trade Danny Briere took the podium to explain the Flyers thought process and go through what it means for the future of the team as they continue retooling the roster.

Danny Briere Explains Why The Flyers Made A Blockbuster Deal With The Flames

During his press conference today Briere was asked about the decision making and criteria for making such a major move in the middle of the season.

According to Briere salary cap flexibility was a major factor for himself and the Flyers as they now get to move off of Joel Farabee's contract.

The biggest thing in all of this is the cap flexibility that it gives us moving forward. Maybe not this year per se but moving forward, Briere explained. It's no secret that, especially in Joel's case, the cap hit moving forward was tough. Most of the discussions we had, teams were not willing to take on his full salary, especially with the term left on it.

Briere continued and admitted that the looming and likely large extension that Frost was looking to receive from the Flyers also played a big factor in the decision to trade him as well.

Morgan was also getting closer to getting paid a lot more money, Briere added. Again, it goes back to the players and the development of the players around them. We are a little different than we've ever been, I think, within the Flyers organization where there are a lot more prospects coming in.

Now the priority for the Flyers becomes to develop young talent and build a sustainable roster who can compete in the long-term.

Whether that means building around Matvei Michkov, newly acquired Jakob Pelletier, and Jamie Drysdale or other still yet to make their debut remains to be seen.

Clearly Briere is excited for the future of the Flyers franchise despite the mixed reception to his latest move and has a bigger picture plan to bring the Flyers back to playoff hockey.
