A Canadian team has been active in attempting to strengthen their roster, especially on defense, but might their attention turn to signing star center Elias Pettersson?
The Vancouver Canucks had Pettersson in talks with several teams, including the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres, while they were shopping J.T. Miller as well.
The Hurricanes had tried to trade for Pettersson or Miller before completing a massive three-team trade with Colorado and Chicago for Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall.
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin would trade Pettersson if the right opportunity presented itself and continues to speak with teams like Buffalo.
Ottawa Senators GM Steve Staios has very little cap room and would likely have to trade a roster player in order to make a splash.

Ottawa has expressed interest in defensemen Marcus Pettersson of Pittsburgh and Ivan Provorov of Columbus, but increasing offense could be on their list as well. The Senators rank 26th in the NHL in goals per game (2.71).
Pettersson, 26, is entering the first season of an eight-year, $92.8 million contract that includes a no-movement clause starting July 1. He heads the TFP Trade Watch List.
The Senators would likely have to trade center Josh Norris as part of a package for Pettersson, reports TFP's David Pagnotta.
Norris, 25, is entering his third year of an eight-year, $63.6 million contract and has 17 goals and 10 assists for 27 points in 48 games this season.
Pettersson, however, has 11 goals and 19 assists for 31 points in 43 games. Allvin reportedly is seeking a center and potentially a defenseman as a return in a trade for Pettersson or Miller.
