Legendary NHL Referee Danny McCourt Passes Away

Some very unfortunate news has come out from the hockey world today, legendary NHL referee Danny McCourt has tragically passed away.

Dan McCourt, a charismatic National Hockey League official, Greater Sudbury Sports Hall-of-Famer and master of the quick wit, infectious smile, and never-ending story, has died. He was 70 and had been ill for some time.

A proud Skead resident, McCourt made the rare transition from player to referee to linesman, putting in an improbable 25-year career in the league from 1979 to 2004. He then worked for more than a decade as an NHL officiating manager.

McCourt was a member of one of Greater Sudbury's most famous hockey families. Brother Dale McCourt was a star in the OHL, played more than 500 games in the NHL, and enjoyed a fruitful career in Switzerland.

Their uncle, George Armstrong, a Hockey Hall-of-Famer, captained the last Toronto Maple Leafs team to win the Stanley Cup, in 1967.

Last month, McCourt celebrated his uncle's life when he spoke at ceremonies renaming Garson Arena the George Armstrong Community Centre and Arena.

McCourt was an integral local part of the NOJHL including many years serving on its officials' supervisory staff, and his dedication to hockey and to his community will be remembered fondly.
