When Team Canada announced their roster for the 2025 World Junior championship, it was faced with backlash. Now that Canada is eliminated, the backlash is justified.

Canada did not medal, largely due to the lack of scoring from the team. Having left players such as 2024 3rd overall pick Beckett Sennecke, 7th overall pick Carter Yakemchuk, 9th overall pick Zayne Parekh, and 21st overall pick Michael Hage, among many others at home, it is no shock to fans.

Hockey Canada Senior Vice President Scott Salmond commented on the disastrous tournament:

"We will look to get better," said Salmond. "We will make changes. And we will be better."

Ultimately, Salmond did accept that the process of selections must be changed despite head coach Dave Cameron not being consistent in that messaging.

"We'll look at our selection process for sure," said Salmond of the process he oversaw. "We'll look at how we build teams. ... Skill. We'll be criticized and probably should be criticized about how this team was constructed."

The president and CEO of Hockey Canada ended with this final message, exemplifying that this is a blip on the team, but not an irredeemable obstacle.

"Anyone who bought a package is going to see unbelievable hockey," said the president and CEO of Hockey Canada. "While it feels unthinkable, it certainly has happened in the past. There was a time when Canada came eighth. So what you do is you go back and you look at where are we right now, what is it that we've done in the past that we should no longer do, and what should we do more of?"

We will see if Team Canada learns from its mistakes, or if this disappointing new status-quo persists.
