Jonathan Toews has been out of the NHL for two seasons due to health concerns, but according to the former Blackhawks captain, his career may not be over.
Over the past few years, the Chicago Blackhawks have begun a rebuild following one of the most successful periods in franchise history, capturing three Stanley Cup's in the 2010's.
Despite the stain that is all over that team, the success was led by captain Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane among others, and while Kane has gone on to play in New York and Detroit, Toews has not played since 2022/23.
Now however, he has revealed that his career may not be over after all, as he noted in an interview with GQ that he still believes he has something to offer at the NHL level.
I haven't spoken about this to a lot of people, but it's definitely still in there. I've talked to a lot of the guys that are done, and a lot of them will say that desire to be on the ice competing and to be in the locker room with the guys never goes away. It's just something that you have to accept when your time comes. So there's that, but at the same time, I think there's a big part of me that really wants to give it my all, to get back on the ice and see where it takes me.
There's a part of me that really doesn't feel like my career is over yet, and who knows what this next part of the journey looks like, as far as getting back on the ice and trying to make a return to the NHL. There's never any guarantees in life, but I'm going to give it my best shot. I'm going to enjoy every step of the way.
As hard as it's been at times, I look back now and I'm pretty thankful for it all. So we'll see what happens.
In his last year with Chicago, Toews tallied 15 goals and 31 points in 53 games played, and while many believe his role in the Kyle Beach situation shouldn't allow him back into the league, if he can still play there will be interest.
At 36-years of age, the belief was that Toews' career had come to an end, but without an official announcement, it appears he's now trying to work his way back, so don't expect that we've heard the last of Jonathan Toews in the NHL just yet.
