In some unfortunate news coming out of the sports world today, legendary broadcaster Greg Gumbel has sadly passed away at the age of 78.

Greg Gumbel, a celebrated CBS broadcaster who enjoyed a career spanning decades that covered every sport imaginable, died on Friday. He was 78.

The family said in a statement to CBS News that Greg Gumbel had been fighting cancer.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel. He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten.

Greg's memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him.

Gumbel, over the span of more than 20 years, was a face of CBS's NFL and college basketball coverage, both from the broadcast booth and as a studio host.

He retired from NFL coverage in 2022 but remained a part of college basketball broadcasts until earlier this year.

In 2024, Gumbel stepped back from covering the NCAA Tournament, citing "family health issues."

A New Orleans native and former baseball player at Loras College, Gumbel's path to broadcasting took some weird turns.

While working in the hospital supply sales, his brother convinced him to audition for a weekend sportscaster opening at WMAQ-TV in Chicago. He was hired and stayed until he was lured away by ESPN in 1981.

In the early years of the network, he served as a "SportsCenter" anchor before migrating to MSG Network, CBS, NBC, and back to CBS.

We would like to send our deepest condolences to all of Greg's family and friends during this very difficult time.
