Toronto Maple Leafs Lose Defenseman Dakota Mermis on Waivers by Western Team
The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially lost their defenseman Dakota Mermis, who was claimed on waivers by a Western Conference team.
Yesterday, the Maple Leafs announced that they placed Alex Nylander and Dakota Mermis on waivers.
Unfortunately, only Alex Nylander reached the AHL, and Mermis was claimed.
Mermis, who was injured before the start of the season, was put on waivers by the Maple Leafs after his conditioning stint with the Marlies ended.
He had to go through waivers to stay in the AHL and was claimed by the Utah Hockey Club.
Elliotte Friedman confirmed the news on X:
The 30-year-old defenseman signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Maple Leafs last summer, but didn't get a chance to wear the uniform in a game.
He was never drafted but has taken part in 74 NHL games for the Arizona Coyotes, New Jersey Devils, and Minnesota Wild since 2017
In the 2023-24 season, Mermis scored eight points, including three goals, in 47 games with the Wild.
He will join the Utah HC's defensive unit and should get an opportunity soon considering the many injuries within their group.
Defensemen Sean Durzi, Maveric Lamoureux, and John Marino have all been sidelined with long-term injuries.
As of now, the team is sixth in the Central Division but is only five points behind the Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avalanche in the fourth and fifth ranks.
Utah is set to face the Avalanche tonight, in what should be a great confrontation on the ice.
An update on Mermis' status should be made soon, but it would be surprising to see him in action tonight.
