Quinn Hughes is widely respected as one of the most talented players in the NHL, with barely a mark on his reputation, but on Saturday night against the Ottawa Senators, he received a game misconduct penalty.
With Sens star Josh Norris having his back to the play at high speeds, Hughes checked him to the back, forcing his face into the boards, and with a brutal cut on his face, he was forced down the tunnel.
As a result of the injury, Hughes was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct, with Friedman clarifying that this was all about NHL rule 41.5:
The play looked bad at high speed, and when slowed down it's easy to see why the officials made the call that they did, although unsurprisingly, Canucks fans aren't happy with what they believe was a dive from Norris.
Whether it was a dive or not, at full speed this didn't look like the right play to make from Hughes, and now it's very likely that he'll hear from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
With Ryan Reaves getting five games for a check to the head of Darnell Nurse, any potential suspension certainly won't be as bad as that, and with Hughes' fairly clean record, that will play in his favour as well.
For now though, we sit back and wait to hear from the league as the Canucks continue their battle with the Senators in a primetime matchup on Hockey Night in Canada.
