The Calgary Flames are off to a very solid start this season, and while there are many factors in that run, the early success of veteran Anthony Mantha can't be understated. Unfortunately, the 30-year old standout is now done for the year, as it has been announced he will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL, ending his 2024/25 campaign before it could truly get going.
The former first-round pick has been out for the last week looking to get a diagnosis on what initially wasn't expected to be a long-term injury, but now, the team have confirmed that he will miss the remainder of the year.
Given that he signed a one-year deal with the team in the off-season, it's a very tough break for Mantha, who was looking to prove that at 30-years of age, he still has a contract of a few years left in him. Now, his future in the league is up in the air as he will likely be closer to 32 before he gets back to 100%, and with a game that already struggles on the defensive end, it's a tough break.
As for the Flames, they were looking to showcase Mantha early in the year as a potential trade asset, and now, this will definitely hold them back from that, making it a very hard situation for all those involved. In 13 games with Calgary this season, Mantha tallied 4 goals and 7 points with a +6 differential, so now we hope that he can get back to 100% and get on the ice to prove that he can still play at a very high level in the NHL.
