University of South Florida basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim tragically passed away yesterday at the age of 43, the school announced.
Abdur-Rahim had just completed his first season with the Bulls where he lead the team to a program-record 25-win season which resulted in a regular-season championship. He also won Coach of the year in the American Athletic Conference. USF athletic director Michael Kelly released the following statement about Amir.
"All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim," USF athletic director Michael Kelly said in a statement. "He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss."
Amir Abdur-Rahim was considered to be a rising star in the basketball world by many. Not only did he set program records with USF in his first season there, but he also had success with Kennesaw State, leading them to an NCAA playoff appearance the previous year. The Basketball world has come together to mourn the loss of the young and promising coach.
Amir Abdur-Rahim's passing is particularly devastating for a community that has already been devastated by Hurricane Milton. It is a harsh reminder of the fragility of life, and it is never something to be taken for granted. Markerzone news would like to extend our condolences to Amir's family and friends, as well as the USF athletics department, and especially the basketball team. Rest in peace Amir.
