Filip Zadina, a former sixth overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft, has had to resort to a professional tryout contract, or PTO, in an attempt to play in 2024-25
Filip Zadina spent parts of five seasons with the Detroit Red Wings after being drafted by the team, but failed to find himself a permanent spot in the NHL lineup, and was often sent to the AHL's Grand Rapid Griffins, something he wasn't overly happy about. In July of 2023, the Red Wings placed Zadina on waivers after failing to find a trade partner. Zadina cleared, and eventually became an unrestricted free agent when Detroit refused to make him a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent. Zadina then signed a one-year deal with the San Jose Sharks worth $1.1 million.
Zadina played 72 games for the Sharks in 2023-24, putting up his best numbers in the NHL so far in his career. It was not enough, however, to get an extension with San Jose. Zadina had 13 goals and 23 points.
Zadina may have a shot in Buffalo, as the team attempts to get back to competing for a playoff spot after years of missing the post season. If he fails to get a regular contract with the PTO, the 24-year-old Czech may be forced to head back home to play hockey in 2024-25.
