Capitals' Alex Ovechkin's mother makes surprising comments on Wayne Gretzky's goal record: has he given up?

Alex Ovechkin is approaching the great Wayne Gretzky's NHL goal record of 894, but the Washington Capitals star is reportedly not focused on that target, per his mother.

Alex Ovechkin, after being drafted first overall in the 2004 NHL entry draft, has been one of the brightest stars in hockey. Hailed as one of, if not the greatest goal scorer of all time, he has won significant hardware, including a Stanley Cup win in 2018.

The Washington Capitals captain is now firmly in second place on the NHL's all time goals list, only being the legendary Wayne Gretzky, with a whopping 853 goals, but he still requires 42 more to beat out the great one. With this in mind, and as he slows down due to age (he will turn 39 next month), there is still a possibility that he will not beat out Wayne Gretzky. While most fans believe he will, his own mother has revealed in an interview that he is not focused on the goal record.

Alex Ovechkin's mother Tatyana Ovechkina, a two time Olympic gold medalist, has met with media or the first time since her husband's passing last year, and in a new interview has made surprising comments about her sons headspace (which you can read here).

It is surprising to hear the Alex Ovechkin isn't focused on the target of 895 goals, however, with his general scoring prowess in mind, he will likely still reach the target. Whether or not he continues his hockey career in the NHL or not following the end of his contract with the Capitals is still unknown.
